What Makes a Good Research Paper?

Whatever its topic or length, an effective research paper should meet the following ten requirements:

  1. The paper must include a clear thesis.
  2. The writer must show a solid understanding of the topic and source material used.
  3. The writer must show an in-depth reading on the topic, including the recognized authorities in the field.
  4. The paper must acknowledge the opposition’s viewpoint but it must show why the point being argued is more valid.
  5. The points must be organized clearly and in a logical order.
  6. Each point must be supported by solid, persuasive facts and examples.
  7. Every outside source must be carefully quoted and documented.
  8. All supporting material must be verifiable.
  9. The paper must follow the standard conventions of the genre, including the use of correct documentation and a Works Cited page.
  10. The paper must use a standard level of written language. This is the level of proficiency expected of educated people in high schools, colleges, universities, and work settings.
