Labor & Employment LawHistorically, employment relationships were primarily governed by contracts. A worker entered into an employment contract with an employer, and the terms of employment were dictated by the terms of the contract. Employees had no guarantees of safety beyond those negotiated in the contract. With increasing industrialization, corporate employers grew larger and workplace hazards increased. Workers realized that to counter the power of corporations and to protect themselves they needed to organize into unions to bargain with the employer. Eventually, Congress passed laws protecting the rights of workers to organize collectively. In this course, we will cover the most significant employment concepts, and you will have an opportunity to learn, and become familiar with, different forms of employment relationships, employees’ rights, and different types of compensation arrangements, among other important related topics.
